When you are a king, extra parties are the loyal personal guard that you can always rely on. The cost peaks as the extra party recruits new soldiers, then it becomes much more reasonable. If you go into the Party section of the Clan menu, you can adjust their max party wages. That won't exactly let you set the size of the party, but if you set it low enough it'll keep them smaller. 500 is my usual go-to for smallish (50 or so) parties.
